The simplest explanation is: terpenes are the ‘essential oils’ of plants, fruits, and even bugs!
We like to focus on the terpenes in cannabis for multiple reasons.
Everything you already love about a cannabis high, smell, and taste is thanks to the terpenes!
Terpenes are secreted by tiny glands in the cannabis plant. Then we can harvest and use them for medical and recreational purposes.
Each terpene has it’s own characteristics, ‘Limonene’ for example is found in cannabis as well as citrus fruits. Weed strains with limonene have the smell of an orange (think Tangie) or other citrus fruits (Lemon Haze will smell like lemons). Limonene’s healing properties include being an antidepressant, antifungal, and antibacterial!
There are over 200 terpenes found in cannabis (according to MedicalJane.com) Each one holds its own terpene specific benefit and knowing terpene profiles can help recreational and medical users customize their smoking experience.
One way to elevate your terpene experience it to pick a primary terpene in the strain your smoking or dabbing (if the packaging doesn’t include a terp profile, try google!) and then research what foods have the same or similar terpenes.
If you’re smoking a ‘Tangie’ or ‘Lemon’ strain, try eating an orange. Just trust us.
